Caden Hampton, an 8-year-old 4-Her from the Cheney Challengers 4-H Club enjoys combing his bucket calves and messing with their tails. What he does not enjoy, however, is being kicked.
This is Hampton’s second year in the bucket calf project. Caden’s bucket calf this year is a black angus Heifer calf named Oreo. His first bucket calf was a Black Angus Steer Calf named Junior.
Junior kicked Caden in the knee on the first day that Caden had him. “I just didn’t know what to do,” said Caden. Caden kept with the project in 2009 and earned a blue ribbon at the Sedgwick County Fair.
With a desire to earn another blue ribbon, Caden enrolled for the Bucket Calf project again.
After arriving at the 2010 Fair and getting Oreo’s pen set up, Caden bent down to spray his calves’ hooves with fly spray. While attempting this grooming task, Caden received a swift kick to the face from Oreo.
Medical personnel from the Cheney area checked on Caden’s condition after he was kicked. With a few ice packs and a several paper towels, Caden was on his way to recovery.
At the bucket calf show on Thursday, Caden said he had people come up to him saying, “I thought you were in the hospital!”
With a few scratches on his face, Caden walked Oreo into the show ring. Caden answered the judge’s questions about Oreo’s name, when she was born and where different body parts were located on Oreo.
Caden’s skill with his calf earned him a blue ribbon. “She was really good in the ring,” he said.
The 2010 Sedgwick Co Fair was the first time that Oreo had left the farm. Caden thinks Oreo was probably nervous about being at the fair and that is why she kicked.
Even though Oreo kicked him, Caden is keeping the calf and not selling it. “I wasn’t glad to sell Junior,” said Caden after selling the calf in 2009.
Caden plans to continue showing animals in the future. He is planning on bring a steer to the fair next year.
Besides Oreo, Caden is also showing a rabbit at the fair. “I didn’t have very much animals,” said Caden describing why he decided to enroll in the bucket calf and rabbit projects in the first place. “I love animals.”
Photo Fun - Friday, July 9, 2010
Madison Terstriep of the Goddard 4-H Club has several photos on display at this year’s fair.
One of her photos is of a “rabid” squirrel. “He kept trying to bite everybody and attack the other squirrels,” said Madison.
Madison took a photo of a butterfly on her grandma’s front porch and also entered it into the fair. Other photos by
Madison include a feet making a star shape and a photo of her sister holding a dandelion, blowing the seeds away.
Madison also got an interesting photo of her and her mom’s hands together making a heart shape.
This is Madison’s third year in 4-H, but her first year in the photography project. She enrolled in the project because she thought it would be fun.
Madison also has a purple-ribbon sewing project on display at the fair and a champion rabbit that went up for Best-Of-Show.
Check out Madison’s projects and see how she did on her photography!

July 10, 2010, Saturday & July 11, 2010, Sunday
Happy times passed fast. It was the final day of the Sedgwick County Fair. Cheney Fairgrounds were filled with excitement and joy. I was amazed to see the flow of crowd within the 5 minutes after the Demolition Derby was finished.
Demolition Derby was a hit. The arena was filled with people. I was there about 15 minutes before the show began. I noticed that most people were first seated in the area. As the show progressed, people started moving around. Eventually, there was one big “human fence” forming outside those strong metal fences. It was pretty impressing.
I was inspired by one young boy at the fair yesterday. I met him and his family during the BBQ Contest when they were going around to taste food of different booths. I followed the boy for a little while wanting to take a picture of him. I was surprised at his answer when I told him my request. He told me that I had to get his parents’ permission to do so, and I did it. Finally, I took a nice family picture of them.
I learned something from him: the importance of maintaining the virtue of respect for others.
I am so thankful for the learning opportunity given to me.
It was a precious experience to me. I was proud to be a part of the fair board to make the Sedgwick County Fair a success.
From this internship experience, I learned new knowledge about the operation of the fair. More importantly, I gained insight into the Midwest American culture. I took advantage of every learning opportunity. Thanks to a lot of you that shared your cultures and traditions with me.
I also want to thank all of you for your hospitalities. There were several new acquainted friends of mine spent their time to show me around the fair. Your friendliness and hospitalities are greatly appreciated!

Growing up in a small city in Malaysia, I did not get much chance to learn how to distinguish different types of cattle. Today, I was so glad that I got a chance to pat Jazz, a female “beef” cow. I learned that we usually get beef from cows like Jazz, but not from “dairy” cows.
In the evening, I was assigned to take pictures at the CBR Horizon Bull Blowout. It was my first time watching a live bull blowout show. The arena was crowded. I had to go around the arena to get good spots for my photo shooting assignment. Marti explained to me how the show worked and rules that bull riders had to follow. Seriously, that helped a lot in understanding the entire process of the show!
For tomorrow, the last day of the 2010 Sedgwick County Fair, we will have a few more fun activities.
Here is a brief preview of what will be happening in the morning on the Cheney Fairgrounds tomorrow: Run to Cheney races will take place in the morning: 7.30am for the 5K race and 8.30am for the 1-mile race. The 4-H Dog Show will begin at 8am. Entries for the Car Show will be opened at 8am, and awards will be given at 2pm. At 10am, we will have a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. Also, the Sterberg Museum of Natural History will open their exhibition at 10am.
Sarah’s Dance will perform at 4pm on the Open Air Stage. Rising Stars will follow at 4.30pm.
The Hot Dog Eating Contest caught my attention when I was looking at the Saturday schedule. I wonder what would be the maximum number of hot dogs those contestants can eat at the contest tomorrow.
Demolition Derby will be a hit tomorrow. It will start at 7pm. Gates will be open at 5.30pm. Gate tickets will be sold at $10 for adults and $8 for children. This year, the Sedgwick County Fair will be showing Demolition Combines. Don’t miss the action!
Get some good rest tonight and “get pumped” for tomorrow’s activities.
July 8, 2010, Thursday
We had an unexpected good turnout today. While I was walking around the fairground, I saw a lot of students or groups that were coming to the fair. Perhaps they chose to come to the Sedgwick County Fair for their field trip.
There were several animal showmanship sessions going on from morning till noon. It was fun to see how those participants took care of their farm animals.
Food and commercial vendors were still opened for people to visit.
Today was the Bob’s day. The Bob FM had a remote broadcast on the fairground. Visitors received free gifts when they visited representatives from the radio station. Lucky “BOBs” received their free fair buttons because today was their day- the Bob’s day.
I was only able to be present at the fair for a couple of hours today, and subsequently, I missed out on the fun of the parade.
For tomorrow, the 4-H exhibitions will continue to be held at 9am. The Citizens State Bank Children’s Petting Zoo will be opened from 4pm to 10pm.
In the evening, we will have several exciting activities on the fairground:
Pride of Texas Carnival will be opened from 6.30pm to 11.30pm. Pride of Texas bought The Zipper from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. It will be in Cheney at the fair till Saturday. So, don’t miss out the opportunity!
The softball tournament will start at 7pm tomorrow.
For the CBR Horizon Bull Blowout, we will have stock coming from several top stock providers: Dodge Buckin' Bulls, Rollin' F Rough Stock, OK Rodeo and McDonald Rodeo. Door tickets will be sold at $12 for adults and $8 for children. Admission is free for children under the age of 5.
The Fair Idol Contest will resume tomorrow. It will start at 7.30pm. Remember to get your fair button to vote for your favorite contestants.
Around 8pm, we will have the Round Robin showmanship at the fair.
The Lucky People will be performing on the open air stage from 9pm to 11.30pm. Fair button is required for the admission of the Lucky People performance.
See you all tomorrow~
July 7, 2010, Wednesday
The weather was awesome today! We had a good turnout on the first day of the fair.
There were a variety of food and commercial booths at the fair. I could smell the food upon entering the fairground. No, I was not exaggerating: The food was awesome! I was told that the funnel cake is the no. 1 fair food.
They were showing animals at the fair. Families and kids enjoyed their time in the animal exhibition.
The Fair Idol started at 7pm. We had 15 contestants today, and only 8 of them were selected to perform on Friday. A lot of people were there to support their favorite contestants. (Notice that the Fair Idol will not be held tomorrow due to the Parade.)
Pride of Texas Carnival attracted a big crowd tonight. Today’s weather was perfect for people to go to the carnival.
For tomorrow, the 4-H Exhibit will continue to be held at the fair from 8.30am to 10.30am. Remember to bring your kids to the Children’s Petting Zoo and enjoy your time in this mini zoo. Pride of Texas Carnival, which is a daily program, will be held from 6.30pm to 11.30pm tomorrow.
Tomorrow’s Special: Sedgwick County Fair Parade at 7pm.
The parade will begin at the Cheney High School parking lot near the intersection of Main and Sixth streets. After looping through the parking lot of Cheney Golden Age Home, the parade will head south along Main Street to the south end of the downtown area.
The softball tournament will also start at 7pm tomorrow. At 8pm, we will have the Wolfgang performing on the open air stage. Fair buttons are required for this event.
Special Note: Thursday is "Bob Day." Radio station KIBB-FM, 97.1, will be giving free Fair buttons to anyone named Bob or Robert and can probe it with driver's license, check book, or other form of identification. They also will be broadcasting live tomorrow.
See you all tomorrow~
July 6, 2010, Tuesday
It’s FAIR WEEK, and I am getting really excited about it! Hopefully, the weather will have mercy on us at the fairground. I got drenched when I was at the Chisholm Trail Festival in Newton last weekend. Everyone was busy with their facilities when it rained. As a visitor, all I could see in front of me was a “crowd” of umbrellas forming near the stage. It was fun though! I had a new experience of listening to rock music in the rain.
For our Sedgwick County Fair, there are several activities that you should not miss!
For tomorrow, which is Wednesday, July 7, we will have the 4- H Bake Sale from 6pm to 9pm. Come and get yourselves something to eat before you go to the carnival. The Pride of Texas Carnival, which is another big feature of the fair, will start at 6.30pm and lasts till 11.30pm. The carnival will be open every night of the fair week from 6.30pm to 11.30pm. Plus, there will be something new this year, our completely restored obstacle course for kids - The Raiders, and it is themed like a pirate ships!
At 7pm, we will have the Softball tournament. Come support your teams or simply relax and enjoy the games.
The Fair Idol Contest will begin at 7pm. This is a three night competition that begins Wednesday and then picks up on Friday with the Finale on Saturday. Denver Aiken, who was crowned last year's Sedgwick County Fair Idol, will return to perform this year at the Fair Idol finale on Saturday, July, 10. Be sure to get your Fair button and vote for your favorite contestants!
So, what are you waiting for? Get excited and plan on coming to the fair. We will plan to see you tomorrow at the Sedgwick County Fair!
June 29, 2010
The fair is just around the corner. I am excited about it, especially after I read the fair guide. It was fun to see myself in the article. I feel that I can relate more personally to the fair when I realized that I am a part of it.
Just last week, I managed to deliver some fair guides and other materials to three media outlets. I made all my deliveries successfully. I enjoyed the experience. In fact, I wanted to thank Marti for her trust in my driving skills. (Laughing~) I learned my way around Wichita. I actually encountered some difficulties delivering things to one of the media outlets. I could not believe that after living in Wichita for almost 3 years, I still made a mistake distinguishing Woodlawn Street from Woodland Street. I thinkI was too reliant on the GPS!
I have been working on the Sedgwick County Fair page on Facebook for about a month. It is actually a good learning opportunity for a Facebook newbie like me to learn more about the use of social networking tools for event publicity and advertisement. I am so addicted to Facebook now. I realized that there is so much I could do with it.
I just received my Sedgwick County Fair shirt. It is a grey shirt with the fair theme on the front. It says “Let’s Ride.” I like its simple design. The message it conveys is clear and straight to the point telling others information about the fair. I also received my fair button. It will definitely induce fond memories of the fair whenever I see it.
When I was updating the fair schedule on Facebook, I realized that there will be several new events adding to the fair this year. Most of the new events are added to Saturday. Among them are the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Sarah’s Dance, Rising Stars, Hot Dog Eating Contest, and others. These new events sound like a lot of fun to me. I think it will be the same for other fair attendants too.
Marti and I will continue to work on the Facebook advertisement part of the fair in 2 weeks when the fair is approaching. I am excited about learning more about the marketing strategies and advertisement resources. June 9, 2010
I am Adeline from Malaysia. I came over to Wichita for my studies in Fall 2007. It was about 40,000 miles I had to travel to Wichita from Malaysia. Currently, I am a senior double majoring in Psychology and Communication at Wichita State University.
I have never expected that I would this opportunity to be an intern for the Sedgwick County Fair. I am excited about it. I am expecting it to be a new exposure to the American culture, especially the Midwest Cowboy culture. With the WSU slogan, “Go Shox!” I am planning to experience the American Midwest Culture through the Segwick County Fair from July 7 to 10.
I knew absolutely nothing about the fair before the job interview with Marti Johnson, the Communications Chairperson. Even after that, I asked around people who have been living in Wichita for some time to see if they could share their experience with me about the fair. However, it seems to me that most of them do not know much about the Sedgwick County Fair at the Cheney Fairground. Eventually, my questions aroused their curiosity to know more about the fair. Some of them showed their interest in coming to the fair with their families.
There were many photos taken from previous years. My attention was drawn to three particular events’ pictures. Among them were the Parade, Bull Blowout, and Demolition Derby. I always enjoy going to a parade. I enjoy seeing people using their creativity to decorate their vehicles. It is just so amazing to see the “makeover” of vehicles.
From its name, I can tell that I need to be prepared to see people getting bucked off bulls. I always admire people’s courage to ride bulls. Growing up in Malaysia’s culture, I have never seen this kind of activity before. So, when I heard about this activity, I was excited about it. Certainly, I won’t wear any red clothes on Friday!
The Demolition Derby is also a brand new event name to me. I have never heard of it before until I read the newspaper article about the fair. The cars are painted with different colors. Looking them from the pictures, they look exactly like those toy trucks my brother and I used to play with in childhood. They will be shown in real life: A car race with a lot of crashes and dust.
I believe that I am going to have a wonderful experience working with other volunteers at the fair. It will be a fantastic learning experience for a person like me, who knows a little about the local culture in Kansas. I’m ready for it!
